Real commitment to Melbourne Airport Rail
The Greens have announced a $1 billion federal commitment to Melbourne Airport Rail, as part of $10 billion in transport funding over four years that prioritises public transport.
“It is unacceptable and frankly embarrassing that in 2016 Melbourne doesn’t have a rail line to the airport,” said Senator Janet Rice, the Australian Greens spokesperson for transport and infrastructure.
“Right now, anyone going to the airport has to make the choice of paying for a taxi or outlandish parking prices, or getting a bus. All these options are subject to increasing congestion and uncertainty as to just how long the journey will take.
“Airport Rail will offer travellers an easier, cleaner, more reliable option, without the risk of missing their flight because of chaos on the roads.
“There has been talk about Airport Rail for years. We need action.  The Greens are committed to making a significant federal contribution to this long-overdue project.
“The airport and surrounding precinct is a big employment hub and this rail line will offer workers a clean and reliable option to get to work on time.
“Tourists arriving in Melbourne don’t need the confusion of trying to find an easy and affordable way of getting into the city,” said Senator Rice, who is also the spokesperson for tourism.
“Melbourne Airport Rail is part of the Greens commitment taking us towards a clean transport future.”
The announcement comes as part of the Greens $10 billion nationwide transport package.
