Remove illogical ban on helmet mounted cameras

Greens transport spokesperson Samantha Dunn has called on the transport minister to clarify whether bike helmet cameras are illegal after a magistrate upheld a fine against a motorcyclist.

“More and more bicycle riders and motorcyclists are using cameras to film dangerous behaviour on the roads,” Samantha Dunn said.

“Now police are fining bike riders for using helmet cameras, taking away one avenue for legal recourse when riders are hit by cars and other road users.

“We’ve seen that helmet mounted cameras are valuable in documenting bad behaviour on the roads. This has led to changes which have made the roads safer.

“If it’s actually illegal to use helmet mounted cameras, the Minister needs to do something to fix that law as soon as possible,” she said.
