School sites should stay in public hands say Greens

2017-03-03

Former school sites being mooted for sale should remain in public hands, Education Spokesperson, Sue Pennicuik MP said today.

“History tells us that selling off school sites is short sighted and has led to the current overcrowding problems and a shortage of schools in the same areas that previous governments flogged off public schools,” Ms Pennicuik said.

“The sites the current government wants to sell are in population growth areas which will, in the future, require new schools to meet the increasing demand.

“Even if a site is not currently being used as a school it should remain in public hands and be used for educational and other public purposes,” Ms Pennicuik said.
