Security Flaws in Melbourne's Train Network

2016-11-11

Greens transport spokesperson Samantha Dunn says there will be more train failures unless the Government gets serious about fixing the decrepit Metro system, following a network-wide shutdown on Thursday night.

“Melbourne’s train network is poorly maintained, unreliable and increasingly dangerous,” Samantha Dunn said.

“This follows the Auditor General’s report on Wednesday that cyber security weaknesses in Metro and V-Line control systems haven't been addressed, despite warnings as early as 2010. The State Government has dropped the ball on the security of train control systems, and last night was an example of the chaos that could result if they were cyber attacked.”

“The Government needs a plan to turn this around or we can expect more failures. Investing in maintenance and implementing the Auditor General’s recommendations on cyber security would be a good place to start,” she said.
