Shipping battle not over yet

The Greens have vowed to work with senate colleagues to make sure the government’s coastal shipping legislation is blocked in the Senate after it was ushered through the House of Representatives.

“The government seems determined to impose these unnecessary changes on a vital local industry at the cost of Australian jobs,” said Australian Greens transport spokesperson Senator Janet Rice.

“The proposed changes are a continuation of the government’s attacks on people at work, giving an unfair competitive advantage to foreign-flagged vessels employing low-waged crew.

“At stake are Australian jobs, our national security and our marine environment.

“Our land is girt by sea and we need a strong local shipping industry and workforce.”
