Victoria alone in opposing safe cycling laws

2017-04-19

The Victorian government is now alone in opposing minimum bicycle overtaking distance laws following the Western Australian Labor government's announcement that they will proceed with a trial to make cyclists safer.

“Victoria is now the only Australian State without 'Metre Matters' laws in place or in trial,” said Samantha Dunn MP, Greens Spokesperson for Cycling.

“There have been three cycling deaths involving motor vehicles in Victoria in the past five weeks. A mother of two in Yarraville was struck by a truck. A bicycle touring enthusiast in Benalla was hit from behind by a car. A father of five in Pakenham was struck by a ute.

“Minimum passing distance laws would go a long way to make it safer for the most vulnerable of road users, and help prevent these needless deaths and the loss to these families.

“Cyclists will be rallying outside Parliament on 10 May to demand Labor act," said Ms Dunn.
