Victoria spends less on social housing per person than any other state

The Victorian Greens have said the Victorian Labor Government is making the housing crisis worse, following the release of the latest Productivity Commission Report on Government Services (RoGS).

The report was released today and reveals Victoria currently spends less on social housing per person than any other state in the country.

Leader of the Victorian Greens, Samantha Ratnam, said there were over 120,000 people on the waiting list for public housing in Victoria.

Yet rather than commit to building the amount of public housing we need, she said Labor was handing over public housing land to private developers and sinking billions of dollars into private toll roads while people were being forced to sleep on the streets.

As part of its housing statement released last year, Labor announced it would demolish all of Victoria’s public housing towers, displacing thousands of residents.

The majority of this land will then be given to private developers.

Quotes attributable to Leader of the Victorian Greens, Samantha Ratnam MLC:

“Victoria spends less on social housing per person than any other state.

“They're also planning to demolish all our public housing towers and hand the land to private developers. That could mean the end of public housing in the state.

“We've heard a lot of spin from the Labor Government but here are the facts.

“We're in a housing crisis and Labor is making it worse.”
