The Victorian Labor government’s opposition to a plastic bag ban has been dealt another blow, with New South Wales Labor leader Luke Foley overnight endorsing The Project’s campaign to ban plastic bags in Victoria, NSW and WA.
Foley states that ‘More than 70 per cent of rubbish entering our oceans is plastic’ and that ‘NSW Labor supports strong action to reduce the number of plastic bags'.
He continues, ‘Labor’s proposal would bring NSW into line with the ACT, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory, which all introduced restrictions on plastic bags…'
Greens waste spokesperson Nina Springle said the Victorian government is isolated in its opposition to a plastic bag ban and needs to get behind the Greens bill which is currently before the parliament.
“The Greens bill is before the parliament and ready to be voted into law,” Nina Springle said.
“We can ban bags and stop this source of plastic pollution at its source.
“The Victorian government is on the losing side of this argument. The Premier should listen to the overwhelming support for this campaign and pledge to work with us to get rid of plastic bags,” she said.
