Victorian Greens celebrate record-breaking council elections

2016-11-04

The Victorian Greens are celebrating final results showing that the 2016 local government election has delivered a record number of Greens councillors.

“This has been a break through election for Greens in local government," said Willisa Hogarth, Convenor of the Victorian Greens.
“We have increased our councillors across Victoria from 17 before the election to 29 now.
“This strong support for the Greens is a credit to the hard work and commitment from our current and former councillors in their local communities.
“Notably, gains have been made across Melbourne's inner-city, suburbs and in regional areas.
“The first ever Greens councillors have been elected to Banyule, Cardinia, Hobsons Bay and Monash councils.
“A record four councillors have been elected in Darebin, Moreland and Yarra councils, and three new councillors have been elected to the City of Port Phillip.
“Greens councillors have also been returned in Melbourne, Ballarat, Greater Dandenong, Indigo and Colac Otway.
“Many thanks to our returning councillors who have worked so hard in local government whose worked contributed to the strong support for the Greens in this election.
“We also thank our candidates who were not elected this time, some by the smallest of margins, for their hard work and dedication.
