Victorian Greens children and families spokesperson Nina Springle has urged the Victorian government to fast track a compensation scheme for clergy abuse survivors, following confirmation that police will press charges against Cardinal Pell.
"Clergy abuse and the subsequent cover ups have destroyed many lives," Nina Springle said.
"The state government needs to fast track a compensation scheme for survivors. There is cross-party support for state redress, but progress has been far too slow.
"A lot of people have been waiting for this day, and we hope news that these allegations will be heard in court provides survivors with some comfort.
"Cardinal Pell says he will return to defend the charges, but Australia needs to strip the Vatican of it's diplomatic immunity. It shouldn't be up to the alleged perpetrator to decide whether they face justice," she said.
