PRESS RELEASE: Local Greens MP asks: who will pay for open spaces created by elevated rail?
Nina Springle, Greens’ member for the South Eastern Metropolitan region, yesterday in Parliament asked who will pay for the construction and upkeep of the new open spaces imagined by the proposed elevated rail concepts along the Pakenham-Cranbourne line.
“I have met on a few occasions with local residents’ groups about issues of public open space, which is a perennial issue in the South East,” Ms Springle told parliament.
“The concept plans released on Saturday would create the equivalent of 11 MCGs of open space for communities.
“The possibility that local councils might be forced to pay for the construction and upkeep of these open spaces, especially with rate capping to commence in July, is of concern.”
The Minister for Transport, Jacinta Allen, has 30 days to respond to Ms Springle’s question in writing.
