One million dollar fine for Crown too little, too late

2021-04-27

The Victorian Greens say the fine given to Crown today is too little too late following years of inaction by both the state government and regulator.

The Greens say that while the fine recognises Crown’s dodgy behaviour, it shouldn’t have taken years of mounting evidence to finally arrive.

Despite being the maximum fine able to be given by the regulator, the reality is it’s loose change for the gambling giant, and took the announcement of a Royal Commission to be issued.

Leader of the Victorian Greens, Samantha Ratnam said it’s time for the Victorian Labor Government to break up with Crown for good.

She added that it shouldn’t have taken years of damning allegations and the announcement of a Royal Commission to spur the regulator to act.

Quotes attributable to Leader of the Victorian Greens, Samantha Ratnam MLC:

“Crown has been spared by government leniency and by the regulator for years, making this fine too little, too late.

“It shouldn’t take years of damning allegations and the announcement of a Royal Commission to finally spur our regulator to act.

“While the fine itself will likely be nothing more than loose change to Crown, we hope this provides the government with yet another sign that it’s time to break up with the gambling giant for good.”
