South Kensington Station upgrades are a hard-earned win for the community

2020-08-04

The Victorian Greens have welcomed the announcement of funding for much-needed upgrade work to South Kensington Station and say it follows years of campaigning by the Greens and community members.

The upgrades – which will be funded via a $24 million package being shared by a number of other stations as well – will help give the local community safer access to public transport.

The current South Kensington Station has been dangerous for a long time due its narrow platforms, inadequate shelter, poor lighting at night and restrictive access for wheelchairs and prams.

Member for Melbourne, Ellen Sandell, said she hopes these issues will be fixed as a result of the funding so the station can finally be safe and accessible for the community it serves.

She added that while we still have much more to do to fix our public transport system, the Greens remain committed to improving public transport and protecting Melbourne’s liveability as our city grows.

Quotes attributable to Acting Leader of the Victorian Greens, Ellen Sandell MP:

“These upgrades are a direct result of the hard work of the local community, who have been campaigning for safer access to public transport for years.

“So many of my constituents have told me they felt unsafe at South Kensington Station, but hopefully this new funding will help to upgrade the station and make it safe and accessible for everyone. This is a win for them.”
