The Victorian Greens have welcomed news that the VCGLR will soon be reformed with a new gambling and casino commission, which will have a division focusing exclusively on regulating the operator of Crown.
The Greens say the move was inevitable and that the government is doing what clearly needed to happen years ago.
Leader of the Victorian Greens, Samantha Ratnam, said the success of the split will be dependent on the legislative framework surrounding it and whether or not they secure a Commissioner willing to stand up to billionaire companies and stamp out government interference.
The Greens say this is just the first step and that many more will need to be taken to rectify the harm caused by Crown and the culture of leniency that surrounded it for so long.
Quotes attributable to Leader of the Victorian Greens, Samantha Ratnam MLC:
"This was the most obvious thing that needed to happen, but it should be far from the last.
“The new division will need a Commissioner unafraid to stand up to billionaire companies and government interference.
“Otherwise the culture of leniency that allowed Crown to get away with its dodgy behaviour for so long will persist.
“We hope there are many more reforms to come. We know this government has been lax on harm minimisation so who knows how strong they’re willing to be.”
