VICTORIAN LABOR CHOICE TO DELAY RENEWABLES A BETRAYAL IN A CLIMATE EMERGENCY

The Victorian Greens have slammed Labor’s decision to delay Victoria’s clean energy transition, saying that Labor could fund offshore wind projects - they’re just choosing not to.

In a major blow to Victoria’s ability to meet its renewable energy targets, Labor today announced it will delay auctions for government funding for offshore wind projects, pushing out the state’s clean energy transition.

It comes just one day after the release of a damning climate risk report that has warned that unless urgent action is taken to cut emissions, there will be apocalyptic consequences for Victoria.

The Victorian Greens say that the climate emergency and our clean energy transition should be the priority for all levels of government, but instead of acting with urgency state and federal Labor are squabbling while approving new fossil fuel projects and stalling renewables.

Quotes attributable to the Victorian Greens spokesperson for clean energy transition, Dr Tim Read:

“We’re in a climate emergency and there’s no excuses for Labor delaying the clean energy transition, they could fund offshore wind, they’re just choosing not to.

“If only these were submarines, they’d be funded in an instant. But Labor doesn’t seem to think it’s worth it to invest in protecting Victoria’s life and ecosystems.”

“Labor can’t keep blaming the market for walking away when it’s spending so little on the transition to renewable energy.”
