Agriculture & Water
Food and water are essential for life, but agriculture is increasingly dominated by corporate mega-farms, productive green wedges are being developed, and our rivers are running dry.
The Greens believe we need a resilient food supply and to look after our rivers for the long term.
Explore our plan for Agriculture & Water
- Stop data centres and old mines from guzzling water
-
While our farms and ecosystems struggle to get the water they need, data centres and old mines have plans to take way more than their fair share.
The Greens are calling for a moratorium on all new large scale data centres and to ban old mines from using river and ground water, instead requiring them to pay for their own alternative sustainable sources like recycled water.
- Support for small scale farming
-
The Greens want to see small scale farming supported through apprenticeships for new farmers and peppercorn leases of public and crown land.
- Ensure food supply in the face of global and climate shocks
-
The Greens will develop a Victorian Food Sovereignty Plan to ensure our food systems are resilient, green wedges are legislatively protected, and that all Victorians can access local affordable nutritious food in the face of global and climate shocks.
- Establish a Victorian Centre for Regenerative Agriculture
-
The Greens want to see a research centre established to help farmers reduce reliance on pesticides and synthetic fertilisers, reduce emissions, and build climate resilience.
- Recognise rivers as living entities, more respect for Traditional Owner water rights and returning water to rivers
-
The Greens want Victoria’s rivers and waterways to be recognised as living entities, so that we see them as needing protection, rather than just considering what we can take from them.
We also want to see more respect for Traditional Owner water rights, so First Nations people are better able to care for Country, and keep culture strong along the way.
We will also introduce a moratorium on new water licences, and develop a plan to return water for healthy rivers.
