Protect Animals
Animals should be treated with compassion, not cruelty.
Unlike the major parties, the Greens have a long track record of advocating for animals in the Victorian Parliament.
It’s time we ended government support for the racing industry, duck shooting and battery cages.
Explore our plan to Protect Animals
- End greyhound racing
-
The Greens will ban greyhound racing, with a welfare plan for the future of greyhounds currently in the industry, and a just plan for trainers and other workers to transition to other employment.
- Ban duck shooting
-
The Greens will ban duck shooting for good, and make our wetlands safe for regional communities and nature-based tourism.
- End government support for horse racing and ban jumps racing
-
The racing industry makes millions in profits from animal cruelty and gambling, but the government still props them up with taxpayer money.
The Greens will defund racing by cancelling financial support.
We will also join every other state in Australia in acknowledging the cruelty of jumps racing, and ban it in Victoria.
- Phase out intensive animal farming
-
The Greens will phase out intensive animal farming, including battery cages and sow stalls.
- An independent authority to monitor and protect the rights of animals
-
The interests of animals can’t be in the same hands as the authority for the industries that profit from them.
The Greens will create a separate independent authority to monitor and protect the rights of animals.
- Fix Victoria's wildlife laws
-
Victoria's wildlife laws are 50 years old and badly out of date. Labor promised to fix them - then quietly abandoned those plans. The Greens want to change that.
We’ll overhaul our wildlife laws and fix the permit system that allows massive numbers of native animals to be killed. We'll make sure threatened species don't just get listed - they get a real plan to help them recover.
And we will redirect the funding which currently goes to promoting recreational hunting to protecting species and habitat instead.
