A letter written by 12 year-old Tara Hurst and published in the compilation “Letters to our Home”
Dear Future Generations,
WA is an amazing and beautiful place. We have wildlife that other people in the world have never seen, let alone touched, many places with breath-taking scenery and some of the best beaches in the world.
By your time you’ll probably have electric cars, piles of jobs run by robots and machines, living a life that right now I can’t understand, let alone live in.
Your rivers and lakes in Perth are probably both different ‒ with more infrastructure ‒ and the same ‒ with the gum trees, the birds and wildlife ‒ to the ones I see now. You probably have less parkland though, a lot more houses surrounding these places than I see now. Herdsman in Perth is probably still the same as it ever was. The tiger snakes, gorgeous gums and that serene feeling of solitude. Your oceans are probably the same as the ones I see now, although if you look at the pictures we took of the beaches you’ll probably think that they are terrible because you’ll have better cameras than us, but no matter the quality, the beaches will most likely be the same. Still as blue as ever and the sand as nice as it is now.
WA has pink lakes caused by bacteria (Dunaliella salina) trapped in the salt granules. There’s Esperance, Coral Bay, the Bungle Bungles, Broome, Rottnest Island (home to the famous Quokka), Ningaloo Reef, Wave Rock, an abundance of wineries, Fremantle Harbour and the list goes on; so many wonderful places that are known of around the world that we need to take care of.
I don’t know if you know this in your time but in my time surprisingly enough Perth is one of the most isolated cities in the world! If WA was to be a country on its own, it would be 10th largest in the world!
Remember to take care of this wonderful place,
Cheers,
Tara
