Green Issue: Editorial June 2021

Much of our Greens focus is at a local level and we tend to forget that we are part of a global movement. Viv Glance explains how the Australian Greens, and indeed Greens (WA), interact with Greens parties in neighbouring countries and right across the world, via the Global Greens. On the other side of the Indian Ocean, South Africa managed to free itself from apartheid in 1990. One of the heroes of that struggle, Sheila Suttner, ended up living in Perth and duly continued her human rights advocacy amongst us. Juanita Doorey acknowledges her legacy.

Dorinda Cox is our lead Senate candidate for the next Federal election. She explains how “closing the gap” with our First Nations people has stalled and suggests a pathway towards healing, justice and peace.

In view of our ever-expanding, and in many aspects exponentially increasing, human footprint on the planet, Rob Delves explores the implications of continued business-as-usual economic growth, and asks whether we should inject some degrowth. Chris Johansen gets into his element in reviewing a recent book on Rethinking Food and Agriculture, another imperative enforced by our burgeoning footprint.

Our Senators, Rachel Siewert and Jordon Steele-John, update on their recent sojourns in Canberra. And Brad Pettitt relates what its like being a lone Green newbie in the WA Legislative Council.
