The Greens are Global

Viv Glance and Maureen Boyle

At the Australian Greens National Conference in Hobart I (Viv) was elected as International Secretary for the coming year. This role is about working with Greens parties internationally to help grow the Global Greens Movement, and to work with Australian Greens Member Bodies to inform, mobilise or ask for support on the international issues we care about, as outlined in the Global Greens Charter.

Im looking forward to working with the International Development Committee (IDC), Global Issues Group (GIG) members and the Asia-Pacific Greens Federation (APGF).

The Australian Greens Go Global Facebook Page is one way to follow what is going on internationally. Plus, your direct way to connect to Greens global issues and campaigns is through your GIG representative, Maureen Boyle.

Over the coming weeks we will be planning what 2018 will look like for us and we hope to build on the great work of the out-going International Secretary, Felicity Gray.

To end 2017 Id like to share the Nobel Peace Prize success of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. You can watch the ceremony here.

But the campaign is not over. Australia has not signed the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which passed on 7 July 2017. ICAN will still keep working until the treaty is realised in practice. If you are keen to help watch out for the #KeepPushing hashtag and future actions. Or better still, start a local campaign to raise awareness in your own community about Australia being out of step with the rest of the peace-loving world.
