Young voters can make a difference

With nearly 90% of under 25’s enrolled to vote this election, now is the time for the youth to have a say.

For too long our country has been run by dinosaurs, bigots and the people brought up hiding under desks getting ready for a nuclear blast.

The 2019 enrolment statistics are proof that Australia wants a change.

With an overall enrolment rate of 96.8% we are looking to have one of the most complete democratic elections the world has ever seen. Whatever the reason for the unprecedented enrolment rate, it is important that when putting those numbers down in that booth, we know who we are voting for.

Our country has the capacity to be run with the compassion and values of our modern age. I believe most people under 25 believe this, and want this. So, when voting this election, awareness needs to be sacrament.

As a 23-year-old who has been involved in politics for a measly five years, I have three prongs of advice.

Research ‒ do some reading from newspapers that aren’t Newscorp or Fairfax. Don’t rely on memes and make sure you check out some of the major contenders’ policies on their websites.

Don’t follow the pack ‒ Don’t vote for someone just because your parents are, or your mates are, or your boss is. That could be worse than donkey voting because you could be voting for a party you do not align with. Spend an hour or two on your country and decide who you think would best fit the card!

Take a quiz ‒ by far, the best and quickest way to find out who you align with politically is by using the ABC Vote Compass. It takes less than 10 minutes and if you want to know where you sit compared to our politicians, here is your chance!

This article did not take long to write because I am just absolutely so excited that a huge majority of Australians are choosing to enfranchise themselves! We can make it so we can say ‘life has never been better’ every day.
