Welcoming speeches by Les Harrison and Rae Price to the School Strike marchers at the Blockade in Perth last November
By Les Harrison, Extinction Rebellion Grandparents
On behalf of Extinction Rebellion Grandparents, I am addressing this to you, the younger generation here today ‒ to you who, in relation to climate action, have demonstrated far more wisdom and courage than us, the older generation.
On behalf of Grandparent Rebels behind me, and of any other grandparent who wishes to join with us, in spirit we say that we are sorry. We are truly sorry that our generation has abandoned you in the face of imminent climate disaster. We are truly sorry that you, our grandchildren, have had to take upon yourselves the action we should have taken decades ago. Extinction Rebellion Grandparents solemnly make this pledge to you:
With the support of our fellow Rebels we will never cease our campaign for the climate justice you deserve. We will continue our campaign, in ever increasing numbers, until our political leaders take immediate and effective action. We will ensure, to the best of our ability, that you inherit a quality of life and wellbeing that we, the older generation, have been privileged to enjoy. We will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with you in the battle for our future and that of generations to come.
My fellow grandparent Rebel, Rae, now wishes to say a few words:
I am a mother and a grandmother of two young girls. I’m here today to express my sadness and rage towards State and Federal governments. Their inaction is denying you awesome people a certain and safe future! You, too, are my grandchildren and I join my fellow XRWA GRANDPARENTS group in acknowledging your courage and love. If your grandparents or parents are also concerned about the climate crisis we all face, they may feel more empowered by joining our fabulous group on XRWA GRANDPARENTS. We’ll notify them of actions they can participate in and feel welcomed with friendliness.
Climate action NOW – if not Now – When??
