Today, Australia’s relationship with China seems rather conflicted. On the one hand China is Australia’s biggest trading partner but on the other military tensions between the countries have heightened in recent years. Two articles in this Green Issue attempt to dissect what is going on. One examines the evolving history of Australia’s relationship with the People’s Republic of China since its first rapprochement with that country half a century ago. Another examines the imperialistic framework through which Australia continues to view China.
With military tensions, including threats of use of nuclear weapons, rising all around the world we include a report on an initiative designed to counter such circumstances. Recent progress on efforts to further the Treaty to Prohibit Nuclear Weapons is elaborated, including the encouraging observation that Australia is foregoing its opposition to this initiative and maybe on the way to signing up.
The recent ascension of King Charles III to the British throne has inevitably raised the question of whether Australia really wishes to continue as a subject of the British monarchy. We include an article presenting some reasoning behind the “no” case.
And, we have a further plea for the release of Julian Assange, before it is too late.
Finally, we include the reports for September-October from our hard working MPs, Senator Dorinda Cox, Senator Jordon Steele-John and Hon Brad Pettitt, MLC.
