Green Issue Editorial October 2025

2025-11-07

This edition covers a wide range of issues being addressed in Greens advocacy. Since the failure of the Voice Referendum efforts for appropriate recognition of, and addressing of past and ongoing injustices towards, First Nations People has stalled. The possible exception is in Victoria where their parliament has just passed a treaty with its First Nations Peoples. We include an article pointing out that Australian governments have still not come to terms with how to deal with Aboriginal children who come into conflict with the “law”. Another misconception in relation to First Nations People is that the dingo generally remains considered as just another wild dog, rather than a native species as it is known by First Nations People.

Protecting what is left of the natural environment is at the forefront of Greens philosophy and action, and what better exponent of that than Bob Brown. We include a review of Bob’s latest book, Defiance, compiling stories of those who have dared to stand up for the environment. In this edition we are also including a new series shining a light on some of GWA’s inspiring volunteers. First off the rank is Simone Collins.

Of course, we also like to shine a light on the contradictions and failings of current governments, with the ultimate hope of correcting those pathways. The current federal and WA Labor governments are clearly showing symptoms of cognitive dissonance, which we elaborate on. But to what extent do the Greens remain in a mode of negative criticism rather than seeking ways of collaborating with Labor to achieve the best outcome for a relatively conservative electorate?

As an option to reduce greenhouse gas emissions degrowth, as opposed to an ever increasing GDP, is a consideration. However, it is argued that proceeding full steam ahead (but without steam) with conversion to renewable energy will obviate the need for degrowth. This topic will no doubt be further discussed at the coming COP 30 meetings in Brazil, for which we provide an introductory briefing.

Importantly though, this Green Issue brings you two-monthly snapshots of what our elected Greens representatives have been doing on behalf of us all. We include updates from Senator Jordon Steele-John and our representatives in the WA Legislative Council – Brad Pettitt, Sophie McNeill, Tim Clifford and Jess Beckerling.
