Jordon Steele-John’s June Update

An assessment of the 2025 Federal election, and a pathway for the road ahead

People Power vs The Corporate Machine

I want to start off by thanking everyone who took an action as part of our Greens movement during the Federal Election. Whether you knocked on a door, made a phone call, donated or left a letter for your neighbour, it was meaningful and you helped build strong, lasting support networks in our communities. These will continue to matter beyond any single election campaign.

This was one of the most difficult electoral climates our party has ever faced. We saw a Labor party become more conservative, a Liberal party that completely collapsed in Western Australia and beyond, and billionaire-backed lobby groups flood the airwaves with negative advertising about the Greens.

Despite this, the Greens vote held steady against this onslaught of the establishment, and it was because of all of you and every contribution you made.

We saw record highs in the Senate as our movement works to build a political coalition that is more diverse, connected and powerful than ever before.

At the same time, there is also sadness as we have lost some of our beloved lower house members in Adam, Max and Stephen. The major party vote was just too strong and saw Liberal preferences unseat some of our MPs.

Each of them brought so much to the party room and the movement, and I am sure they will all play a pivotal role in our movement going forward.

In the weeks since the election, one thing has become clear, and that is that Labor has no intention of capitalising on their electoral success to push forward bold and progressive policies, and they still need the support of the Greens in the Senate to pass legislation.

From the thousands of people I spoke with during the campaign, it is clear where our communities are hurting the most. The climate crisis continues to be unaddressed while housing prices and rentals soar, and healthcare becomes less and less affordable.

The Albanese government is already showing where its priorities lie. They are cutting people’s NDIS plans and support, while continuing to hand out billions to fossil fuel corporations, weapons manufacturers and corporate landlords.

The next term of Parliament will be defined by one question: who is advocating for who in the Parliament?

The Greens will continue to advocate for our communities while the major parties are advocating for themselves or their corporate mates.

Our movement is, and always has been, driven by grassroots democracy, climate action, social justice, and peace and nonviolence. That hasn’t changed—and it never will.

I’m deeply honoured to be re-elected as your representative in the Federal Parliament for the next six years. I know the responsibility that comes with it, and I won’t take it for granted.

In Solidarity,

Jordon Steele-John
