Albany ‘Yes’ vote has national implications

Greens South-West MLC Diane Evers, a speaker at this Saturday’s ‘Yes’ rally for marriage equality at Middleton Beach, says Albany voters have the power to sway the national outcome on marriage quality, and has urged them to make their vote count.
“Albany is traditionally a conservative town, and the ABC Vote Compass website shows support for same sex marriage in this Federal electorate is at 51 per cent,” Ms Evers said.
“If we maintain or increase this vote, we will influence what happens at a national scale because the Federal Liberal member for O’Connor has promised to vote on this issue in the Federal Parliament according to this electorate’s vote.
“So that is why I am reaching out to all the potential ‘yes’ voters in Albany who have not voted because they do not feel that this is ‘their issue’.
“This is about making someone else’s life better; about giving our neighbours, our friends, our work colleagues or a stranger walking their dog the same rights that we have.
“And while I personally think this should not even be a question, it is the question that we have been asked to answer, so we should answer it resoundingly.
“I encourage everyone who supports this rally on Saturday to also have conversations, however strange or difficult, with their friends and family about voting.
“Because we can resolve this issue once and for all – without taking any rights away from ourselves.
“And we can prove together that Albany is a welcoming and accepting place where everyone can thrive and be happy, and that we do move with times.”
