Australian Greens spokesperson on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues, Senator Rachel Siewert, responds to the changing time frame for a referendum on constitutional recognition.
“Although some may find it frustrating that the time frame for the referendum has shifted, it is important we get it right. There is clear evidence of the need for further consultation.
"The Greens have said all along that we wouldn't support a referendum going ahead without clear Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples support. Any question put that does not have Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's support would be meaningless.
“The Referendum Council clearly understands there is a need for more consultation and that this needs to be comprehensive. I am hopeful that this will ensure that there has been thorough consultation to form the right question for the referendum.
“This should also open scope to include treaty in the discussion if this is what the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community wants.
“I will continue to call for meaningful reconciliation that carefully addresses the expectations of our First Peoples”.
