Coalition should tell Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voters whether they will pursue treaty after July 2

The Greens have welcomed a shift towards considering treaty by the Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, and have called on the Coalition to make clear their plans for reconciliation if re-elected into Government on July 2.

“Last night Bill Shorten made his strongest indication he would consider treaty alongside constitutional recognition”, Australian Greens Senator Rachel Siewert said today.

“The Greens have long supported reconciliation that achieves sovereignty and treaties, as well as substantive constitutional recognition.

“This issue is an important one to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, the Coalition should make it clear what they plan to pursue if re-elected into Government on July 2.

“I call on the Prime Minister to make this explicitly clear before election day”.
