Government fence-sits on RSPCA following year-long inquiry

2016-08-23

After a year-long inquiry the Government’s response to a Parliamentary report on the operations of the RSPCA is a non-event,  Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren says.
The report, tabled in the Legislative Council today, neglects to take a position on the majority of the 26 recommendations set out by the Parliamentary Select Committee majority.
Ms MacLaren and the ALP’s Sally Talbot rebuffed seven of the 26 recommendations in their Minority Report at the conclusion of the inquiry.
“This is another clear indication of the ludicrousness of the inquiry onto the WA RSPCA,” Ms MacLaren said.
“The Government’s positions in today’s report are only ‘proposed’ but do not go any further than that.
“The report largely points to a review of the Animal Welfare Act that is presently underway, the previous  Easton Review, and an Inspector Governance Framework being developed within the Department of Agriculture and Food.
"This is an example of the Government continuing to sit on the fence in regard to the RSPCA.
“The Government has, however, commended the RSPCA on its education programs promoting better animal welfare outcomes.”
