Greens call on Libs to use Court Hotel campaign event to announce support for same sex marriage, Safe Schools

Greens spokesperson for sexuality and gender identity Lynn MacLaren MLC has called on Colin Barnett and the Liberal Party to use tonight’s campaign event at The Court Hotel to announce their support for same sex marriage and Safe Schools.

Ms MacLaren said she believed it was an insult to the LGTBTIQA+ community to host a pre-election event at one of the city’s most popular nightspots without acknowledging and correcting their opposition to marriage rights for all and ongoing support for LGBTIQA+ students in the State’s schools and TAFEs.

“It seems a bit rich that the Liberal Party would canvass LGBTIQA+ issues without committing to changing their position and supporting these two vital issues in the next Parliament,” Ms MacLaren said.

“I’d hope the party would use the opportunity to apologise to the community and pledge to do much better in terms of standing up for LGBTIQA+ equality.”

Ms MacLaren said the Liberal Party last week did not send a State representative to The Court Hotel to appear alongside herself and the ALP’s Lisa Baker as part of a pre-election panel discussion hosted by LGBTIQA+ publication OUTinPerth.
