Greens call for urgent stay on land clearing in Coolbellup, pending High Court hearing

2016-12-12

South Metro Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren has today appealed to the Government to halt works at Malvolio Road in Coolbellup, pending the result of a High Court hearing to be heard on Friday.

Ms MacLaren said the Government’s continuing with preliminary works including animal trapping – just four days out from a High Court challenge from Save Beeliar Wetlands – was arrogant.

She said it showed a complete disregard for strong community opposition to the project.

“We know clearing permits were issued on Thursday and land clearing is now imminent,” Ms MacLaren said.

“Thousands of people have contacted the Premier’s office in the past week with urgent requests to stop work on Roe 8 and protect our precious wetlands.

“Those requests, like previous requests from Traditional Owners not to build the 5km road to nowhere, have fallen on deaf ears.

“I urge the Environment Minister to hold off on beginning land clearing, at least until we have the result of Friday’s hearing.”
