Greens animal welfare spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon has moved to shut down federal loopholes that allow Australian greyhounds to be exported to Macau for racing at the infamous Canidrome club in China.
"I am seeking advice on what regulations or law changes are needed to close the loophole that allows greyhounds to be exported,” Senator Rhiannon said.
“We have to end this cruel trade.
“If the Turnbull government fails to act to close the existing loophole, the Greens will consider moving a Private Members Bill to end the trade in greyhounds.
“While greyhound exports from Australia have halved since the end of 2015 there is growing concern that some unscrupulous operators are making out that the USA is the destination for dogs that we know finally end up in China.
“China's greyhound industry is notorious for the appalling treatment of the dogs. The greyhound industry in China is privately run and is unregulated.
“Despite the decision of the NSW Liberal-National government to back off on the plan to end greyhound racing, the Greens remain committed to ending this cruel racing practice and to work with the industry on a transition plan,” said Senator Rhiannon.
