Greens support UN calls for an end to prolonged mistreatment in Don Dale

The Greens support calls from the United Nations that the Federal Government must ‘immediately halt the use of excessive force and prolonged mistreatment’ of children at the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre.

“As the chair of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues points out, the Australian Government is a signatory to the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhumane and Degrading Treatment and of the Convention on the Rights of the Child”, said Australian Greens Senator Rachel Siewert.

“The Australian Government has taken positive steps in establishing a Royal Commission into the abuse, but this excessive mistreatment must end now.

“The denigrating treatment of young people at Don Dale will surely undermine any chance of rehabilitation.  The time to end this abuse is now”.
