The Australian Greens have congratulated activists in Sydney and Melbourne for their successful campaign to cancel concerts celebrating the reign of Mao Zedong.
"Many people in the Chinese Australian community stood up against these concerts, and we share in their gratitude to both venues for listening to these concerns," Greens Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Senator Scott Ludlam said today.
"For many Chinese Australians, these proposed events would have been needlessly inflammatory, paying tribute would have been an affront to the suffering of their families under Mao Zedong's regime, during which tens of millions of people died.
"Cancelling these events was the right thing to do, such a misguided celebration is an affront to the thousands of Chinese people that fled the regime and now make their home in our two largest cities."
