Greens welcome more sensible approach to shark mitigation, three years on from drum-lining debacle

2017-01-11

Today’s election promise for a $200,000 shark barrier in Mandurah was a long time coming for friends and family of Ben Gerring according to Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren today, and underscores the success of the hard-fought community campaign against Premier Barnett’s lethal drum lining policy.

‘The promised barrier would be the sixth in WA, with most others co-funded by local governments.

“Clearly the Liberals are campaigning up and down the coast with shark barrier sweeteners for their favourite electorates.”

To date, shark barriers have been installed off Sorrento, Busselton, Dunsborough, Albany, and Coogee.

“It is unfortunate that it took a looming election for the Liberals to get serious about funding local shark mitigation strategies.

“The Greens led the call for a more sensible approach three years ago and will continue to advocate for a science based approach to keep people as safe as possible, while respecting our oceans and the creatures that live in it, including sharks.”
