Homeless need support services, not selfies

2015-12-11

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare Specialist homelessness services report again highlights the scale of the homelessness crisis in Australia, a crisis worsened by the Abbott-Turnbull cuts to services, the Australian Greens said today.

"More than 300 people a day are being turned away from crisis accommodation services stretched to their limits," Australian Greens Deputy Leader and Housing spokesperson Senator Scott Ludlam said.

"Since coming to office, the Abbott-Turnbull government has axed almost $600 million from housing and homelessness programs, including crisis accommodation, and crucial research into homelessness itself.

"Photos from the annual CEO sleepout can raise awareness of the issue, but only funding services properly will actually address it.

"The Australian Greens have a comprehensive plan to address the housing crisis in this country. Perhaps I'll bring a copy for Mr Turnbull to read at the next sleepout," Senator Ludlam said.
