Minister should correct misleading information to surfers

Greens MLC Diane Evers has called on the WA Fisheries Minister to correct his recent public claim that a personal shark deterrent designed for using in diving and kayaking can also be used in surfing, saying he is doing a disservice to the product and potential customers.

“In his media statement of 26 November, the Minister claims that the Freedom 7 personal shark deterrent, which currently attracts a $200 rebate, can be used in surfing,” Ms Evers said.

“However, as the maker, Shark Shield, says clearly in its product information, the Freedom 7 is configured for use in diving, spearfishing and kayaking.

“Shark Shield make another deterrent specifically for use by surfers called the Freedom+ Surf.

“Neither the Freedom+ Surf, nor another surfing-specific shark deterrent called Rpela which is made by SurfSafe, currently attract a rebate. However, I hope this can soon change when trials being conducted by Flinders University in the Neptune Islands off South Australia with both devices verify their effectiveness at deterring great white sharks.

“The Greens believe it is important that the Minister accurately conveys to the public, and surfers in particular, what deterrents are available to them.

“Both the Freedom+ Surf, and Rpela retail for less than the Freedom 7, and some surfers are already buying them, even without the rebate.

“Nothing can make you completely safe in the ocean but along with checking the sharksmart.com.au website for recent shark activity in your area, using a suitable personal shark deterrent may help reduce risk.”
