New legal challenge should be final nail in the coffin for Roe 8

2016-03-30

Greens South Metropolitan MLC Lynn MacLaren says a new legal challenge to the proposed Roe Highway Stage 8 extension to be served today should be the nail in the coffin for the ill-planned road.
"Congratulations to Traditional Owner Corina Abraham for challenging the Government over its process for granting Aboriginal heritage approval for Roe 8, which the Greens exposed in Parliament last year as completely flawed,” Ms MacLaren said.
“As the Greens revealed through persistent questioning, the Aboriginal Cultural Materials Committee recommended in February 2013 that Main Roads’ Section 18 application to disturb registered sites in the Roe 8 project area be rejected because of the exceptional spiritual significance of Bibra and North lakes, and Traditional Owners concerns about this being disturbed.
“However, in June 2015, the ACMC, this time with no specialist anthropologist among its members, was asked to reconsider the same exact application, and on the second occasion, it recommended the application be approved.
