Senator Rhiannon congratulates Streets workers and the AMWU

Greens NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon has given her deep congratulations to the workers at the Streets ice cream factory and the Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union (AMWU) for winning their campaign against a 46 per cent pay cut and slashing of conditions.

“I sincerely congratulate the workers at the Streets ice cream factory and the AMWU. This win sends a strong message to other employers to end attacks on workers’ wages and conditions,” Senator Rhiannon said.

“It’s outrageous that a multinational corporation that made $8 billion in profit last financial year, and that has all the hallmarks of a serious tax-dodger(1) can threaten the livelihoods of Australian workers with a pay cut of 46 per cent.

“The boycott of Streets products called by the Streets workers and AMWU was growing in strength each day and I’ve no doubt this is the reason Unilever has backed down.

“The success of the Streets boycott and recent similar boycott of Carlton United Breweries shows a strengthening union movement, and one which is increasingly ready to demand the reintroduction of the right to strike,” Senator Rhiannon said.
