Transforming Perth

2017-02-28

Perth is one of the best cities in the world, but at nearly 150km from end to end, we are starting to reach the limits of growth. The ten largest growing suburbs are getting further and further from the city centre.

Rapid expansion has come at great cost, wiping out much of the cultural heritage and biodiversity of the Swan Coastal Plain. Unregulated sprawl hasn't helped Perth's housing affordability; we are now one of the least affordable housing markets in the world.
We are dangerously dependent on cars, and outer suburbs lack services and public transport that people in the inner city take for granted.

The Greens believe we can do much better. Our Transit City Plan is a costed proposal for convenient, anywhere to anywhere public transport featuring high-frequency buses, light rail and new passenger rail services. If we make sure that well-designed low-rise development is built along these transport lines, we can protect what we love about our suburbs and create more diverse, affordable housing. That’s the essence of our plan for Transforming Perth.

With our city no longer sprawling out of control and sensible planning regulations in place, we can rebuild the Urban Forest and find a good home in this beautiful part of the world.  Business as usual is… boring. Its time for a change.
