The two major parties miss the mark on renewables: Greens

2017-02-16

The Greens have condemned the recent announcement by Labor as they vowed to not introduce a state based RET in WA, today.

It comes the same day Liberals announce a laughable solar incentive plan for WA after years of coal and gas industry expansion in WA.

The Greens are the now the only party to go to this election with a plan to tackle climate change after Labor disastrously backflipped on their plan to implement a renewable energy target in WA.

Greens Candidate for East Metro Tim Clifford said the WA Greens were now the only party with a real plan to transition to a clean energy economy, achieving 100 per cent renewable energy, within the next term of government.

“New modelling has shown it would be cheaper than business as usual for the South West Interconnected grid system to transition to 100% renewable energy by 2030 through a mix of solar PV, wind power, solar thermal, biomass and battery storage,” he said.

“This would create up to 12,000 jobs a year for West Australians through construction, installation and ongoing maintenance and in particular deliver much needed long-term investment and economic security into regional WA.

“Promising to sit down with industry and the community after the election is an absolute cop-out by Bill Johnston and WA Labor, and the people of Western Australia will not buy it.

“Transitioning to 100 per cent renewable energy by 2030 is both affordable and achievable, and I challenge WA Labor to come up with a real promise to the people of Western Australian that says they are serious about climate change.”

Mr Clifford also commented on the solar incentives plan the Liberals announced today.    "The Liberals announcement on their solar package and renewable energy target is an absolute joke." he said.   "This from a party that floated the idea of a battery storage rebate, but then mysteriously reneged on that idea, just shows they are just doing policy on the run to win votes in a sector where they have zero credibility. "Coupled with the announcement today that Labor will never introduce a state based RET, its obvious the Greens are the only party with a thoroughly researched, industry backed plan to introduce solar, battery storage and a renewable energy target in Western Australia."
