The WA Greens have backed calls for an end to live animal exports from Fremantle and reiterated their long-standing position to permanently phase-out the cruel and inhumane practice.

Australian Greens Senator for WA Rachel Siewert said the latest shocking footage was not a revelation, but yet another a failure by operators, regulators and government to address the barbaric cruelty and horrific conditions aboard live animal export ships.

“Animal suffering in the live export chain is never uncovered by the industry or government officials, but by independent investigations and our courageous non-profit animal welfare investigators.

“Every few years there is a big story on this issue and some temporary measures are put in place, but then things just go back to the way they were and the cruelty continues unabated.”

Australian Greens Senator for WA Jordon Steele-John said phasing out the live export industry would not only stop the unnecessary suffering of millions of animals each year, but create significant opportunities within WA and Australia.

“There is overwhelming public demand for humane and accountable treatment of animals, especially from the farmers who have dedicated their livelihoods to raising and caring for these animals, that must result in a transition to a better system and an end to live exports.

“Tightening the live export rules and regulations will not end the suffering; we must expand the domestic meat processing industry and export of boxed, chilled meat which in turn will create thousands of jobs and boost regional economies within Australia.”
