Sophie McNeill’s December Update

Holding the government to account, particularly with respect to gas expansion in the north-west, climate change, AUKUS and Palestine

By Hon Sophie McNeill, MLC

It was an honour to be sworn in as one of your Greens representatives in the 42nd Parliament. The support from everyone in the Greens movement and beyond has been incredible. While it has only been 6 months we have been hard at work progressing Greens’ policies and holding this WA Labor government to account.

From interrogating the government about their interference in the Murujuga Rock Art Monitoring report and the ongoing fight against Woodside’s Browse carbon bomb to joining community opposition to AUKUS and seismic blasting off the mid-West coast, as well as supporting our Firies and exposing the real impact of last year’s marine heatwave (securing $5 million dollars to protect our reefs in the process)—we have hit the ground running since the election.

Last year was particularly devastating for the people of Gaza and Palestine. As the WA Greens peace and nonviolence spokesperson, it has been a privilege to work with the community in Perth to do our best to show solidarity with the people of Palestine in the face of Israel's horrific genocide and help increase pressure on the federal government, which saw them cease some military exports to Israel.

I have been very fortunate to meet people from across the state since getting elected, from traditional custodian Raelene Cooper at Murujuga to communities in Newman and Punmu in the East Pilbara and coastal communities in Exmouth and Dongara. I have been fortunate to talk to the people who are at the coalface of the climate emergency and increasingly ignored by those in power. These trips have motivated me and will continue to inform my work in Parliament moving forward. I am incredibly grateful for your support this past year and look forward to a year of fighting for a greener climate and more just and equal world in 2026.
