About this role

The Victorian Greens are looking for a Communications Coordinator to deliver strategic communications for and to our movement in the lead up to the next Federal election. In this role you will deliver communications for the Victorian state party, and work with a team to come up with new digital ways to reach voters. You will be a fast and on-message copywriter with experience using social media and mass communications tools, and you’re curious about how we can use new platforms and tactics to grow the Greens movement.

The Victorian Greens strongly encourage people with diverse lived experience to apply, such as First Nations People, people of colour, LGBTQIA+ folks, disabled people and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, even if you feel your professional experience doesn’t match all of the selection criteria. The Greens recognise that structural barriers make it difficult for some people to obtain roles in the progressive movement. When assessing candidates we look at more than just the jobs you’ve been paid to do but the range of ways you’ve picked up skills and knowledge throughout your life.

Position description

In this role you will be a part of a team that will:

  • Communicate Greens messages through mass comms channels, with a focus on volunteer recruitment, fundraising and reactive email and sms
  • Copywriting for the campaign and candidates including candidate biographies, print materials, web copy and newsletters, .
  • Ensure our website is up-to-date and engaging with the latest information about our candidates, policies and events.
  • Support volunteers to do their own copywriting and content creation by training, coordinating and feeding back on their work.
  • Flag emerging risks on email and social media platforms
  • Other work as needed: as a part of a small, agile team, you will be asked to contribute to other work from time-to-time, always with the support of experienced staff

Selection criteria

We encourage you to apply even if you don’t have all of the relevant skills. We’re looking for someone organised and thorough and with passion for our movement, which we prioritise over formal education or qualifications.

We believe there is strength in diversity and are committed to supporting the right person to grow into this role and thrive. For a confidential conversation about this role or the recruitment process, please contact Jess Wheelock at jess.wheelock@vic.greens.org.au

Key selection criteria

  • Values alignment: Commitment to the Greens policies, charter and core values: ecological sustainability, grassroots participatory democracy, social justice and peace and non-violence - and a passion for our movement.
  • Digital communications: Demonstrated experience using social media, mass email tools, and basic web content management.
  • Systems experience: Experience using systems such as contact databases and mass email tools, including Drupal, CiviCRM and Nation Builder (or similar).
  • Communications: Communication skills, especially copywriting, editing and adapting content for different audiences and platforms
  • Teamwork: Strong communication skills and a collaborative, diligent and enthusiastic approach to creative work. Ability to work in a fast paced environment, including meeting deadlines and managing stakeholder expectations.

Bonus points for:

  • Lived experience or connections to First Nations justice, racial justice, LGBTQIA+ justice, disability justice or gendered justice movements.
  • Youth-focused and innovative digital comms: meme-making, TikTok, problem solving and innovating
  • Reporting: Digital reporting, dashboard-building, and analytics
  • Training delivery experience: Demonstrated experience in developing training resources, guides and materials as well as delivering volunteer training events.
  • Political campaigning experience: A working understanding of political or social change campaigning as a staff, volunteer or grassroots activist
