In a state as wealthy as Western Australia, everyone should have a secure home.
But for the roughly one-quarter of West Australians who rent, WA’s broken residential tenancy laws are leaving them powerless in their own homes – if they can even find a home at all.
Our rental protections are consistently ranked amongst the worst in the country. Tenants are subject to unlimited rent increases; a lack of adequate rental standards means they’re often living in substandard conditions; and they can be evicted at any time without a reason.
Making matters worse, WA’s rental vacancy rate keeps hitting record lows while rents are at historic highs – and climbing.
And yet the Cook Labor Government simply tinkers at the edges of tenancy reform, putting the interests of the real estate lobby ahead of the basic human rights of West Australians who rent.
Renters deserve bold action that gets to the heart of the rental crisis – not more lip service from major parties with a vested interest in maintaining the status quo.
The Greens WA are the only presence in state parliament actually fighting for stronger renters’ rights, with an evidence-based plan that includes:
- banning no-fault evictions
- a permanent indexed rent cap
- strong minimum rental standards
All of this is possible. We’ve seen it work in other jurisdictions around Australia and the world. But it’s going to take all of us to make it happen.
