Green Issue Editorial June 2024

2024-07-08

Everybody’s talking about it – and that’s why we chose the Cost-of-Living Crisis as our main theme for this June 2024 edition of Green Issue. Our members and supporters are reporting overwhelming agreement that these household budget pressures are the number one concern whenever conversations turn to political matters.

Lack of affordable housing is usually mentioned as the biggest burden on people’s budget. As it turned out, the four articles we received, all focused on other cost-of-living matters. Chris Johansen is currently visiting his beloved Bangladesh and used the opportunity to compare how cost-of-living problems are perceived in Australia and his “second home” (Cost of Living Perceptions – Australia and Bangladesh).

The other three all analyse cost-of-living through the Climate Crisis lens. WA’s Highway to Hell is a withering critique of the WA Government’s inadequate policies to reduce emissions in the transport sector. My Solar vs Dutton’s Nuclear analyses the costs of the Coalition’s nuclear ambitions by comparing them to the costings of the author’s home solar and battery system. Cutting my energy bills mainly uses research from Rewiring Australia to argue for the very attractive financial benefits involved in the transition from gas to an all-electric household (all renewably-generated, of course).

Our final article, Our Failure in Gazais a moving account of the sufferings of the people of Gaza, mainly based on accounts of health workers. As its title suggests, the account shames the Australian Government’s lack of support for the Palestinian people.

And we also have Green Issue updates from our MPs Jordon Steele-John and Brad Pettitt.
