In a wealthy country like ours, everyone should have a secure home.
Yet almost 1.5 million people in Australia are at risk of mortgage stress.
Meanwhile, the big banks have pocketed $17.6 billion in profit off home loans last financial year alone.
In fact, $761 per month of an average mortgage repayment is pure profit for the major banks.
They’ve been ripping us off for far too long.
That’s why the Greens have announced our plan to stop the profiteering of the big banks.
HomeKeeper is our plan for a discount mortgage for homeowners doing it tough.
An average mortgage holder (with a $589,560 mortgage) would save $4,284 a year with a HomeKeeper mortgage. And all of the big banks would be required by regulation to offer it.
HomeKeeper will be available to all owner-occupiers who want it, even if you’ve already got a mortgage (but not if you’re a property investor).
This policy will stop big banks charging more than is absolutely necessary to provide a mortgage product to people struggling to keep a roof over their heads.
And it will stop the big banks’ super-profits made from your mortgage.
