Tell Albanese: Our laws should protect all of us equally

Labor may introduce their version of the Morrison-era Religious Discrimination Bill this year.

The Religious Discrimination Bill is a Trojan horse for hate. Our laws should protect all of us equally. But another iteration of this Bill could do the opposite.

First introduced by the Liberals, the Bill aimed to further discrimination, not reduce it.

Discrimination harms everyone and all Australians should have protection under the law.

The LGBTIQA+ community has always been subjected to hate, threats and extremism. We are experiencing a storm of social media abuse and harmful national debate about our right to simply exist and live with equality, respect and safety.

We have witnessed a national hate tour and neo-Nazi rally against trans and gender-diverse Australians, and attacks and threats of violence against Drag Story Times and artistry.

We cannot allow this Bill to override existing state and territory laws that protect people from discrimination in employment, and bigoted speech in the name of religion.

Any Bill that enables discrimination against LGBTIQA+ people, against kids and teachers in schools, women, people with disabilities, minority faiths, or First Nations people is unacceptable and must be voted down.

People of faith should be free to practice their religion without fear of harm or prejudice. But this Bill will privilege religious belief over other human rights, giving religious people and institutions the freedom to discriminate against vulnerable people and minority communities.

The Greens will fight this attack on Australians’ shared values of equality and fairness for everyone.
