Public transport should be free.
Too often, catching the bus, train, tram or ferry costs more than it would to drive, even when fuel prices are up.
Public transport is already heavily subsidised by state governments, meaning fares only account for 20-25% of the total cost.
Meanwhile, governments spend millions on expensive, privatised ticketing systems and enforcement.
Fully subsidising public transport to make it free to use for everyone would increase usage, cutting congestion as people leave their cars at home, and reducing transport emissions.
It’s also one way to directly help everyday people during a cost-of-living crisis.
By making public transport free, more people will access it and governments can focus on improving services so they’re more connected, frequent and accessible.
