In a shocking precedent, war crimes whistleblower David McBride has been jailed for up to five and a half years.
This political prosecution began under the Coalition and then continued under the current Albanese Labor Government.
David’s only crime was telling the public the truth about war crimes committed by Australian soldiers in the appalling war in Afghanistan.
Right now, the only person jailed for war crimes committed by Australian troops in Afghanistan is the brave individual who blew the whistle on it.
David’s last chance for freedom lies with the Attorney-General, who can exercise his powers to have David pardoned through the Royal Prerogative of Mercy.
This is his last chance to end this nightmare, to let him return to his kids, his friends and his community.
That's why the Greens are calling for:
- The Attorney-General to advise the Governor-General to use the Royal Prerogative of Mercy to grant a full pardon to David McBride.
- The Federal Parliament to urgently pass whistleblower protection legislation, including an independent whistleblower authority that will protect all future whistleblowers.
Unless we take urgent action, David McBride will be trapped in jail for years because he told the truth.
No Parliament and no government that believes in justice should let that happen.
